Mother Father Deaf Day

Mother Father Deaf Day

Mother Father Deaf Day is observed each year on the last Sunday in April. Because it follows a moving date, the specific calendar day changes annually, but the observance always takes place on a Sunday toward the end of the month. This day honors Deaf parents and their families, especially CODAs (Children of Deaf Adults), and recognizes the unique cultural and linguistic bridge they share between the Deaf and hearing worlds. The term “Mother Father Deaf” comes from a common way CODAs describe their family identity within Deaf culture. First proposed in 1994 and formally observed starting in 1996, Mother Father Deaf Day highlights Deaf culture, the importance of sign language, and the strength of families led by Deaf parents. The day also encourages broader awareness, respect, and understanding of Deaf heritage and community contributions. Mother Father Deaf Day is often marked through storytelling, cultural events, and conversations that celebrate Deaf parents and the pride of growing up in Deaf households.
