Shareware Day
International Shareware Day is observed annually on the second Saturday in December. It’s a time to celebrate and support the creators of shareware—software offered “try before you buy.” The shareware concept originated in the early 1980s. Andrew Fluegelman released “PC-Talk” as “freeware,” demonstrating early shareable software. Bob Wallace coined the term “shareware” in 1983 with his program “PC‑Write”. David Lawrence, a tech talk show host, created International Shareware Day around 1995. The day recognizes the efforts of indie developers who often rely on user contributions for sustainability. Encourages users to support shareware authors by purchasing licenses or making donations. Promotes safe, informed use of shareware and acknowledges the economic challenges such developers face.
