Pupusa Day

Pupusa Day—officially National Pupusa Day—is celebrated on the second Sunday of November each year. In 2025, that falls on November 9. It’s a vibrant holiday in El Salvador (and among Salvadoran communities worldwide) dedicated to the country’s beloved national dish: the pupusa, a thick handmade tortilla stuffed with fillings like cheese, beans, pork, or loroco, and traditionally served with curtido (pickled cabbage slaw) and tomato sauce. Pupusas have ancient roots, dating back over 2,000 years to the Pipil and Lenca peoples of Mesoamerica, who made early versions filled with vegetables and herbs. Meat fillings were introduced around 1570, after Spanish influence. In 2005, El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly declared the pupusa the national dish and established the second Sunday of November as National Pupusa Day to honor this culinary icon and its cultural significance.
