Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is an annual long-distance sled dog race held in Alaska, beginning on the first Saturday of March. The race covers approximately 1,000 miles from Anchorage to Nome, following a historic route once used for mail and supply deliveries, as well as the famous 1925 serum run to Nome. Held in 1973 to preserve sled dog culture and Alaskan history. Roughly 975 to 1,000 miles, depending on the year’s route (Northern or Southern). Takes 8–15 days to complete, depending on weather and trail conditions. Each musher starts with up to 14 dogs and must finish with at least 5. Harsh Arctic conditions, freezing temperatures, blizzards, and treacherous terrain.
