Go Fly a Kite Day

Go Fly a Kite Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of April, encouraging people to enjoy the outdoors and the simple pleasure of kite flying. In 2025, it will fall on April 20. The phrase “go fly a kite” originated in the 1940s as a colloquial way to tell someone to go away. Over time, this expression has been embraced more literally, inspiring a day dedicated to the joy of kite flying. The holiday also pays homage to the rich history of kites, which date back over 2,000 years to ancient China. Kites have been used for various purposes, including scientific experiments—most notably by Benjamin Franklin in 1752 to demonstrate that lightning is electricity.
