Disc Golf Day

National Disc Golf Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of August. This day honors the sport of disc golf—a fun, fast-growing activity that blends the rules and etiquette of traditional golf with the skill of throwing flying discs at designated targets. While the exact origins of disc golf are a bit scattered, early versions of the game date back to the 1920s in Canada, where children reportedly threw tin lids at targets drawn in the sand 1. The sport began to take a more formal shape in the 1960s and 1970s, thanks to pioneers like George Sappenfield and Ed Headrick. Sappenfield introduced Frisbee golf to children during his time as a recreation counselor, and later partnered with Wham-O to promote the sport. Headrick, often called the “father of disc golf,” invented the modern disc golf basket, founded the Disc Golf Association (DGA), and helped establish the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA).
